About Me

My name is Susan Sauerland, and I have been teaching since 1999.  I served in the United States Air Force.  I received my undergrad degree from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, and my Master's degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.  I taught for 14 years in Pennsylvania and for one year on the island of Saipan in the Northern Marianas Islands.  I moved here to Leesburg in 2012 to teach at Leesburg High School.

I have two amazing daughters who live out west.  My eldest, Heather, is currently living in Bend, Oregon.  My youngest, Heidi is currently living in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  Heather is a wildlife and wilderness photographer who also works for a company that caters for disaster crews fighting the large fires that plague the west.  She works to "support her hobbies":  mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, skiing, and CrossFit.  Heidi is a health and fitness consultant and an ultra-runner.  She just completed her second 100 mile race; coming in third place for women.

My hobbies include reading (of course!), sewing, and kayaking.  I enjoy exploring Florida's springs.  I also have a couple of local paddles that I enjoy:  the Dora Canal and Helena Run to Bug Spring.

I am very passionate about my job; I KNOW every student can improve their reading level!  I did not choose to become a teacher.  I was called to teach.  I understand how and why students don't like school; I didn't either.  However, my goal is to make the classroom a safe place for all of my students.  It will be safe physically, emotionally, and academically.  I have been told that I am one of the most strict teachers in the school, and I'm O.K. with that.  I expect my students to work to their potential and respect the classroom environment.  I know that most (if not all!) don't want to be in my class.  That's O.K.  We will work together to increase their reading skills so that they can meet their graduation requirement.

Please know that I always have my students' best interests in my heart and will dedicate the school year to ensure that they are able to do their best.  I live by the following quote:

When we compete with our expectations of ourselves, many victories are possible.
